Fridays in Third Grade

Good Evening!

Almost thought we would get some white stuff on the ground today! It started snowing here at recess time. The kids were excited. It didn't last long though.

Good News! is ours again. I got it purchased for our class. We are the trial run for it. The catch is, that due to it being purchased for us I am requiring it to be used by all students. It will be part of your child's grade for math for the 3rd and 4th quarter. Each child needs to do facts 4x per week. Weekends are not included in this. I sent a note home tonight with your child. If you cannot access it due to no internet capabilities, please write me a letter. I will keep the paper copy for future reference. This is not an app. Your child's username is their name and their password is their initials plus their 6 digit login.  It is their login for successmaker.

I updated the typingclub link to the right

Have a great weekend! Two days left until break.

Mondays in Third Grade

Happy Monday!

Our Holiday Party will  not be at 2:20 next Tuesday, seeing that we are dismissed at 1:35. Our party will start at 12:45. We still need volunteers for drinks/cups, take home treats, and the game. Thank you in advance!

This week's Happenings:
Math: we are working on addition/subtraction with regrouping. We are being exposed to different strategies in order to learn how to manipulate the numbers.

Reading: the kids are finishing up their books and creating a poster that will show the character traits of one on the main characters. The kids will also have to summarize their story on the poster with Somebody, Wants, But, So, Then

Writing: we are finishing up our personal narratives this week.

Fundations: we took Unit 5 test today

Science:   This week in science we started our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child learned how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

In class your child was presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they were pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

There is no math packet this week
Have a great night!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!

I hope you are all having a good week so far. The weather is looking to most October-like! Please still make sure your child is dressing so for outside weather.

This week's happenings:

Thursday is our Santa's workshop day.

Reading: we are finishing up our stories and working on retelling and a little about character traits. We discussed what figurative language is and gave a few examples of idioms, similes, and metaphors.

Math: we are finishing up with learning about grams and liters. We will spend a day or 2 on rounding and then move into review on adding and subtracting with regrouping to end the year.

Writing: we are a little behind here. We will begin our personal narratives this week and hope to finish them before break.

Fundations: We will have our unit 5 test on Thursday.

Science: We are working on forces and motion still.

Friday is an early release day.

Have a great night!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone is staying healthy.

I wanted to get this in yesterday but they were working on my computer and Smartboard at the end of the day so I couldn't access it.

This week I issued a mission to the kids. They were broken up into 2 different groups. The first group's mission was to work on saying thank you to anyone that helped them. The second group's mission was to work on helping out others or letting them be first.  I am asking parent is they saw a difference at home because the missions were not limited to just at school?

Tentatively scheduled is our Christmas party for the 22nd at 2:20.

Have a good night.

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a refreshing and peaceful break. I have kids too so I know peaceful may not have been the goal attained.

We have a busy 3 weeks until winter break is here. I have a lot of material to cover in those short weeks.

This weeks happenings:

Math: We will be finishing up with doing elapsed time and moving into combining like measurements to practice addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Reading: we are working on character traits and identifying how characters react to certain events in stories.  We will also begin working on figurative language before break happens.

Writing: We will be using our knowledge of character traits in our writing. We will be creating a personal narrative about an event in our lives that we did not necessarily like or want to do, but in the end everything turned out good.

Fundations: we learned about the schwa

Science: we are going to do a short unit on forces and motion.

I just wanted to pass on that my free trial to mathfactspro has expired and I am looking into alternatives or ways to get it funded. The kids are welcome to use it for free but it does not keep track of mastered facts and I have no way of monitoring it.

Have a great night.

Mondays in Third Grade

Hello everyone!

Thanksgiving is upon us already and we have a short week!  Today and tomorrow we are going to finish talking about the pilgrims and their start in the New World.  I hope everyone has a great break and we will see the kids back on Monday. I hope everyone stays healthy!

Tomorrow is our feast. We are still looking for bread, fruit, meats, and corn bread. Thank you to all who have donated to our feast and/or are helping with set-up/clean-up. The kids need a plate (wooden if possible), mug and spoon for tomorrow.  They can dress up but do not have too.

Have a great night!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

I just wanted to give a reminder out there to just check in on their child's google account to make sure their chats and video calls are staying appropriate. Also check in with what they are creating and saving on their google drives. These are documents that they can create and share with their friends. We need to make sure that everything created and shared is school appropriate. It is a school account and we here do have access to their work, but when it is created at home we don't always have instant knowledge of it.

We had a talk today about cyber bullying and we had our presentation about bullying/harassment. I know we all want to trust that our kids are behaving. The thing is, they can be exposed to different things even when we do trust them. We need to be vigilant on what they are doing and who they are talking too. They are new to this whole online/messaging world and sometimes they do not know what is appropriate and what isn't. I am learning everyday with my own children to watch them and what is going on around them. Be open with your children so they can feel comfortable sharing. As they get older, that comfort is hard to build. Start having those conversations now.

I don't mean to preach, but the kids have a lot of access to online traffic that we need to be aware of.  This is just a reminder.
Have a good night!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

What a rainy day. Just imagine, this could be snow!

I just wanted to check in with all parents and remind them about their child doing either or  I think I am going to try something different. If I notice that your child hasn't done either math fact site you will receive a reminder email regarding this. It is just a notice for you to double check on your child's progress.Math fact fluency will be part of their math grade this next quarter. That is dependent on their practice at home since we do not get much time in class.

Please let us know if you are or are not able to join the feast next week. We are also still in need of donations for our feast. This is totally dependent on parent donations for the entire 3rd grade.  We appreciate any help. The students have had a very enjoyable time in the past 2 years doing this feast.

Tomorrow is popcorn day.
Please help your child finish their turkey.
Have a good night!

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

Today the kids came home with a form for the presentation on Erin's law. I only need the forms back if you do not want your child to participate in the assembly. Please make sure you check the No on the form if you do send it back.

This week's happenings:

Math: We began a new module this today. We will begin with a short review of telling time and then move into elapsed time problems.

Reading: We are discussing character traits and looking back into our stories to prove what we know and have learned from our readings.

Writing: We will continue to look at writing complete sentences and we are using our writing time to do our Pilgrim Unit simulation. Today many of the colonists got to leave their ship after completing their Compacts.

Turkeys are due as soon as you can get them in. Friday at the latest.

Have a good night!!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Hello Everyone!

It is so nice to be back. I had an amazing experience and you should all be so proud of your children. This award is as much theirs as it is ours. They had to work extremely hard to make this a reality for us. The other teachers and administrators that Mrs. Brockway and I met from all over the country shared the same gratefulness of their students. I feel re-energized and even more excited about the rest of this year. I was able to bring back some maps and pens for the kids of DC and the pen was from the Omni Shoreham Hotel. If you have a chance, google it. It was a great place with a lot of history!

This week's happenings:

The kids have been learning about character traits in reading and writing.

We will be focused on our Pilgrim Unit. This will take most of our time for reading and writing. The kids came home with information about our Feast. This feast is not a Thanksgiving Dinner. It will be after lunch and will just demonstrate the different types of foods that the pilgrims truly ate to survive that first year.  We are looking for donations to assist with these supplies. Please read the note and see if there is anything that you would be able to supply for us.

MATH: Beginning tomorrow we will be moving away from multiplication (DON'T STOP WITH FACT PRACTICE) for a short while. We will begin with adding up different types of measurements, subtraction with regrouping, telling time and elapsed time as well. We will return to multiplication in January.

Have a great night.

Monday's in Third Grade

Hello From Washington, DC,
I have been lucky enough to get to join Mrs. Brockway this week to accept our Blue Ribbon award in DC.  I am hoping to post some pictures tonight.

Tuesday's in Third grade

Hello I apologize for this late post. Tomorrow is our field trip. We will only be gone during the school day. The kids will be able to catch the bus home if they need to. Have your child dress comfortably.
I went home sick today, so I wasn't on my best game. I hope my sub was able to send the kids to the book fair this afternoon. If they didn't get there I will try to let them go immediately in the morning before we go or right At the end of the day. I will get them there somehow. The book fair will also be open during your conference time as well. It gets very crazy in there during the day and it is hard to have the kids gone for 30 min during instruction time to buy their books. I apologize again for any inconvenience.

Have a good night!

Crazy Fridays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

Here are some pictures of our experiment today. We talked about air pressure. In our experiment we showed how when air pressure is high in one area, the air moves to "where there is more room". We dropped baking soda into a water bottle of vinegar by means of an attached balloon. The bubbles created by the mixture created too much air pressure in the bottle so the air moved into the balloon. Therefore blowing the balloon up.

Here is our Halloween Party too!

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,
Tomorrow is our Halloween Party. The parade starts at 1:45 and the party is to follow.

Thank you to all who brought in balloons and bottles. Our experiment should be fun tomorrow!

Have a great night!

Wednesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,
Please bring in field trip permission slips and $ tomorrow.

We are going to do an experiment Friday morning and I am in need of empty water bottles and party balloons (not blown up).

We are going to begin our Pilgrim Unit soon and the kids need to bring in a list of 25 names of people who are living and that they know. I did ok them to include 5 living celebrities if they run out of people's names they know.

Have a good night!

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

This is Red Ribbon Week! Tomorrow's dress up is crazy hair/hat day. If you are a Pec Pacer, I would be careful of the hair since it is picture day for those kiddos.

We will be walking this Thursday to a neighboring church to sing for them our concert songs. Please make sure your child has a coat and good walking shoes.

Friday is the Halloween party. We will have a normal day of activities all morning long. I am still looking for a volunteer to provide a game/activity for the party and for someone to bring drinks as well.

Last week we were the winners of the Success Maker Contest. We will have a PJ day probably after the Red Ribbon dress up days are over. I am very proud of my class!!!

This weeks happenings:
They haven't changed much from last week.
Fundations: we will finish up Unit 3 this week and have a test either Wednesday or Thursday.

Math: we are wrapping up multiplication Module 1 in the next couple weeks.

Reading: This week the kids will finish up working on their presentations of information they learned from their weather systems.

We will also work on verbs.

Have a Great Night

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!
Sorry I haven't posted this week. It has been a busy one between the concert Monday night and the Blue Ribbon Bash last night!
I was so glad to see so many people at the celebration last night! Thank you to all who could make it!

Report cards came home today in communicators. Parents I just want to remind you that our 4,3,2,1 scales are not equal to A,B,C,D.  A 4 represents that your child has gone above and beyond their knowledge in an area. A 3 represents that your child has learned and understood what was taught to them and can now work independently. A 2 means that your child may mostly or partially understand the information but still needs to help working on it and cannot totally work independently without my help. A 1 represents that your child has not understood any of the material that has been taught to them.

This week we have been wrapping up our reading groups on weather. The kids are starting to create their presentation on how to stay safe in a specific weather disaster.

We are continuing to talk about adjectives in writing. We will be moving into working on our complete sentences using all of the parts of speech.

We finally got our Fundation student notebooks to help us with our spelling options in Fundations and in Writing.

The kids came home with the prodigy website information. That has been a great source of at level math for each student. If your child hasn't shown you it yet please take a moment to see it. I will begin to offer extra incentives for your student if they take time at home to work/play the game.

Thank you to everyone that has contacted me to sign up for a conference. I know a couple emailed me today. I will get back to you tomorrow with a definite answer on your times. If you have not gotten a time yet, no worries, you can still sign up!
Have a great night.

Well I think Fall is upon us and Winter is not far behind! YUCK!

We will be trying to get our air mass experiment in tomorrow. Unfortunately that is the first activity cut out if we run out of time in our day. Hopefully we get it in because there are a few more experiments I would like to do as well.

This coming Thursday is ADJECTIVE DAY!  The kids need to pick an adjective and dress like it. I sent home a sheet with each student giving some examples. SOFT-wear soft clothing or glue cotton balls to a headband, SPARKLY-wear sparkles on your clothes, MESSY-wear a stained shirt/pants and don't brush your hair. Be creative.

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!

A full week of learning!!! Happy Monday to all.

I loved hearing everyone's 'good deed' from over the weekend. Thank you parents for helping your children achieve a good deed. If we all just spread a little extra love daily, we could change someone's life.

This week's happenings:

Math: we are now permanently switching classes for math. I will try to keep track of who has math homework for each teacher and post it but please check with your child's notebook.
We are beginning to relate groups, arrays, and number bonds with division this week.

Reading:  We are discussing main idea and nonfiction text still. We will begin reading groups tomorrow. All groups will be learning about a weather phenomenon.

Writing: We are discussing commas and apostrophes. We will also be discussing our first informational report soon.

Fundations: Their Unit 1 test came home tonight in their common core binders. Please sign it and return it. We will start Unit 2 tomorrow.

Science: Weather. We will be doing an experiment this week to demonstrate air mass.

We had a firefighter visit today to thank them for all they do in light of September 11th. The kids got to ask him questions about his job.

Please email me for a conference time.

Have a great night!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Evening!

Not much new to report.
We had our last MAP test today!!! YEAH!!!!

Please make sure your child is getting their xtramath time in. If you are still having trouble signing in I am going to try to have the kids sign in tomorrow and see what isn't working for them.

Have a great night!

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good afternoon!
I hope you all had a great long weekend!

This week's happenings:

We will be finishing up our MAP testing this week. We had our first one last Friday. We take 4 total. We will finish this upcoming Thursday.

Tomorrow we have library. Since we missed it yesterday, Mrs. Hickman let us make it up tomorrow.

Math: we will continue associating multiplication with groups and numbers in groups. We stress what each factor represents so that the kids know how to apply and use multiplication correctly.

With MAP testing ending this week we will begin switching classes for math towards the end of the week.

Writing: we are working on correctly using commas. Last week we used commas in groups or lists. Today we talked about using commas in dialogue. The kids had to write their own conversation given specific guidelines.

Fundations: we have our Unit 1 test tomorrow. It covers -tch,ch, and what happens to an 'a' if it follows a 'w' or a 'qu', and what makes the /k/ sound at the end of a word (c,k,ck), and a review of closed syllables.

We also discussed ways to keep our thinking positive in class. We created a chart of ways of changing our negative thinking positive, such as, instead of thinking "this is too hard" I will think "this may take some extra time and a little more effort". We will continue this chart tomorrow.

Reading: we will be working on identifying the main idea of informational text.

We have music tomorrow and practice CDs for our concert are available for purchase. You may bring in $ tomorrow if you like. They are the same price as always.
Have a great night!

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

Happy 2nd week of school!

Xtramath homework starts this week. Many of the students have been able to get in to xtramath and I could see their progress. Unfortunately, xtramath has changed a few things on our end so I am trying to figure some things out. I sent home the letter on Friday with an enrollment code. If that isn't working use my email, your students first name and the Pin# (it is the last 4 digits in your enrollment code) to log in. You do need to completely sign out in order for it to work. Let me know again if you cannot get it.

Remember the Meet the Teacher night and Back to School BBQ are Wednesday night. Hope to see you there.

If your child came home from school with a slightly incomplete assignment notebook it is because we were running late this afternoon.

Have a good night!

Friday, August 28, 2015

Friday in Third Grade

Good afternoon!

We all made it through our first long week of school. The kids and I are still working on procedures and we even got to start learning some new things.

Today the students got to meet their math teachers. We will be switching everyday starting Monday for math class.

I did send home the Xtramath instructions. Please re-sign in with the new code. You will have to logout of your old account. Your old login will not match up with my account and I will not be able to see their work. Also, please do not purchase the xtramath app. You can access it through your internet such as safari on your iphone or tablet or your internet explorer/chrome. Try it this weekend so that we can both see if we are connected.

Next week happenings:
Math: begin equal groups leading into multiplication

Writing: Working on sentence types and writing complete sentences. Also, working on what a paragraph looks like.

Reading: I have a few more assessments to work on. We will be getting books that are a good fit book at each student's level. We are going to cross our science unit into our reading groups and learn more in detail about different weather conditions. Finish talking about Genres.

Fundations: we are working on tch, ch, know and no, and will talk about what happens to an 'a' when it is paired with a w.

Science: we will be learning about weather in our text book.

Have a good weekend.

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Third Day in Third Grade!

Happy Third day!

Today we have continued to work on our classroom procedures.
We had our first day in music today. Our music concert is coming up in just a few weeks!

Tomorrow we will have music and PE.

Success Maker will start next week.
We explored our Science Textbooks today. We will begin with learning about the weather in our class. Due to different needed materials we will be rotating topics between the third grade classes.

In math we played an addition game. Please note that Xtra math will begin tomorrow. I will be sending home a new login for you to use. You will have to sign out of your current account and then re-sign in for you to link up with my account. Do not use last year's information.

Many of the students need addition practice. We will be beginning multiplication next week so we will spend very little time reviewing addition. Please help your child at home with this skill.

Some students have an about me sheet for homework if they didn't finish it in class.

Happy Birthday to Payton!!!

Have a great night.

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

Happy Second Day!

Good Afternoon!!

Sorry I missed posting yesterday after our super first day! I have had a great 2 days. I have loved getting to know your kiddos. I believe we will have a super year. Thank you to everyone that returned their parent homework today. You can still get it to me tomorrow if you haven't yet.

I had to leave early today so I am not worried about the students' assignment notebook. There was not homework assigned.
Please sign up for this blog to the right of this post. You can get daily updates about what we did in school and what is for homework.

This week I will be giving a few "pretests". It will allow me to see what your child knows and how I can best help him/her.

We did start Fundations today. We reviewed what closed syllables are.
We also started our first 2 cursive letters today, l and h.

I am looking forward to a great year!
Have a good night!

Tomorrow we will be having an end of the year ice cream sundae party.

The kids have begun bringing home some supplies this week already. Our room is beginning to look a little empty.

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Morning,
I am sorry this is coming today. My computer was not letting me access any of my google functions yesterday. I could get to my email and that was it. 13 days left! That is it!  Oh My!

This week we will be working on end of the quarter assessments. The kids will be working on attaining their Reading Challenge goal that we will set this week. I have met with all of the kids to help them find a book in a genre that they haven't read yet.

In math we will be finishing up fractions. YEAH!! The kids have done very well with understanding the basic fundamentals of fractions.

In writing we will be discussing dialog writing and hopefully will be able to create their own short comic strip if we have time.

Today we were supposed to get to see the 8th graders shoot off their rockets. Due to the wind I am not sure that will be happening.

The kids will be meeting with their pen pals from Winnebago this Friday.

Next Monday is our field trip. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately and has a sweatshirt with them no matter what the temperature is outside. The cave can get down to 50 degrees in some spots. They will also need a sack lunch as well. Please try to not send a lunch box. That way we don't have to keep track of anything after lunch. A brown paper sack is best.

Have a good Day/Night.

Wednesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!

We are just plugging along this week.

We have a PARCC test tomorrow morning.

I have enjoyed watching the kids figure out how to create a google slide presentation this week. It is like a power point presentation, only in google. Some students have done one before, so they are helping one another learn. I gave each group an animal from their specific ecosystem they had been reading about. Each student is responsible for 1 slide of their presentation. They are, for the most part, learning and exploring how to create these on their own. I had shown them the basics previously and I have one that I made up for an example, but other than that they are independently working as a team. They are also learning how to delegate and work together too.

We had Channel 13 come in today for Project Tornado. The kids will be on t.v. tomorrow morning.

We visit the book fair tomorrow for library. They will have until Friday to purchase books.

Have a great night and enjoy the weather!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon!

Hello, a very full communicator came home today. Please check out everything. The permission slip for our field trip came home in it. We will be travelling to the Cave of the Mounds in May. Due to # restrictions set by The Cave we will not be taking any chaperons this year. There just isn't enough room for a lot of people to go down. We will be taking school buses up, so we will only be gone during the school day.
I am so looking forward to this trip due to I didn't get to go last year. My youngest got the stomach flu the morning we were to go. Fingers crossed, no repeats!

I also wanted to let you all know that we have temporarily stopped our math groups. Due to different testing during the month of April, we were losing math time if we continued switching groups. We will try to pick back up in May.

Have a great night!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Welcome Back Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great break!  I had a very relaxing time. However, we got a new 4 legged friend. Our family adopted a new dog, Otis. He is a 1 1/2 year old pit bull. He is so sweet. He didn't bark for the first 2 days we had him. He got over that fast though.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. I was not in class today. I went to a conference with the other 3rd grade teachers and learned about some great new technology based project based learning ideas. It was outstanding!! I cannot wait to use it with the kids in class.

This week's happenings:
We start MAP testing on Thursday.
Math: We will continue working on fractions through April. We will also be talking a little about making graphs.

Writing/Reading: During April we will be working on poetry and using our figurative language within our poetry.

Reading: I would also like to cover some more nonfiction text again.  I may also use our science unit on rocks as part of our literacy block too.

Science: We will begin our unit on Rocks to prepare for our field trip to the Cave of the Mounds in May.  Details about that will come home very soon!

Have a great night!

Wednesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

Whew, what a Wednesday!

Popcorn day was today. I am not sure what happened to our notes, but we did not get one sent home last Thursday. I did explain this to our popcorn dad and we took note as to who wanted popcorn for today. If your child got popcorn today but didn't have a quarter, please send it tomorrow. They were to have it written in their assignment notebooks today if they owed a quarter.  Thank you.

Tomorrow we will be painting our globes. Please do not send your child in nice clothes. If they have a paint shirt they will be able to put that on before we begin. We will be using water-based paint.

The country projects turned out AWESOME! It was so neat to see how proud the kids were about their country. The posters are in our hallway on display for all to see.

We began our idiom plays yesterday. Each group has a different play that contains different idioms that pertain to a certain subject. One is sport idioms, another is education idioms, another is animal idioms and the final one has to do with body idioms.  They kids are having fun with how silly they are.

Tomorrow is our last day of PARCC testing for this round!!!!!!  Friday we have Star Lab.

Have a great night!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

I probably owe some an apology. Your children came home quite messy today. We started our paper mache globes today and I must say we had fun. Messy is always fun, isn't it? I will post pictures soon. We will do the second layer on Monday. It is just flower and water with a little salt so it should just wash out.

We finished our Literacy section of the PARCC today. Next Tuesday and Thursday we will take the math section.

This week has been a cluster of projects. We have our country projects and we are working on writing the report part in class.

We wrote a letter to an imaginary friend in another country telling them what it is like to be a 9 year old in America.

We wrote a story about what we would do if we caught a leprechaun. These will replace our snowmen in the hall. Be forewarned...the snowmen are coming home soon.

Tomorrow they will work with a partner and write a summary of a nonfiction book They have been reading together. They will then present this summary to the class.

We started our globes.

In Fundations we have been discussing adding suffixes to words that end in y.

In math we are still working our way through fractions and on the side we are discussing quadrilaterals.

Next week report schedule:
MONDAY: Abby, Becca, Carson, Jayden, Ethan, Jaylen, Dayne
TUESDAY: Brady S, Ali, Brady G, Morgan
WEDNESDAY: Brinly, Addie, Casey, Meegan, Josh, Katie

all students need to be prepared to do their report on any day. If we are moving along quicker they could do their report sooner. If they are bringing a food and let me know I will not move your child's date.

Have a good night and a good weekend.  Enjoy the weather!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

Tomorrow is Wacky Wednesday. Have your student dress silly (not obnoxious) to help us celebrate how wacky our weeks are with PARCC testing!!  Mismatched clothes, crazy hair, hats and mismatched shoes. No props, wild hats, or outrageous shoes. The kids and I talked about what is appropriate for tomorrow.

I did ask the kids to bring in their country report outlines tomorrow (the sheet I sent home to fill in as a guide).   We will be using them to help write our papers. I do not want a full report or projects due tomorrow. I did say that the kids could, if needed, bring in their projects starting tomorrow.

Have a great night!

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,
I hope you had a great weekend!
I must say I had one of the most exciting weekends ever. My son is a wrestler. He is in 7th grade. This weekend was the IKWF sectional tournament and my son qualified for the state tournament. Needless to say I am very proud. Due to his winning I will be gone on Friday to watch him wrestle at the BMO center in Rockford.
I know projects are due Friday. If anyone is having a difficulty finishing just let me know and I can give your child until Monday. For those of you who are having their child make a food item, could you please send an ingredient list and I will let you know which day your child will be presenting so you know which day to have your food ready.

This weekend is the Fun Fair. Please try to attend. It has been a lot of fun in the past and it only has gotten better year to year. Please also send in your raffle tickets and money. If you would like more tickets just let us know!

No homework packet this week.  We PARCC test tomorrow and Thursday.

Have a great night.

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good afternoon,
I hope you all had safe travels this morning!

We survived our first day of PARCC testing. The kids did great.

Today we also got to watch the first half of The BFG. It is an older animated version, so it is a little silly. We will finish it tomorrow. I read the book to the class over the past few weeks during snack.

Tomorrow is our Continent test. Please help your child study.

Have a good night!

Monday, March 2, 2015

Fridays in Third Grade

Good Evening!

Remember Monday is Tropical Island Day!
Wear your tropical island clothing. (just remember to bring warm clothing for recess!)

There will be a sub on Monday.
Remember if you are picking up your child and it is not an everyday occurrence, you need to send a note and then check in with me (or my sub) so that I can see who your child is going home with. Anyone that is picking up your child HAS to be on your emergency contact list here at school. I cannot let your child go home with anyone that is not on that list. Thank you for  your understanding. We are trying to make everything as safe as possible for your children!

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Wednesdays in Third Grade

Good Evening,

The Fun Fair is quickly coming up. Our third grade basket for the raffle is looking a little weak. Our theme is Game Night. It could be anything from snacks to enjoy, outdoor games, card games, board games.  Whatever works for you. You could even donate $ to the basket and we would pool it to buy one or more gifts for the basket.  Thank you to all who already have donated and thank you to those who will and just haven't yet. It is greatly appreciated!!!!

Have a good night!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good evening,

The kids wrote in their assignment notebooks to bring in a big pink eraser if they need one. We have many students burning through their pencil eraser. Can you check to see if your child needs one please?  It would make our work so much neater and easier!

Mondays in Third Grade

Good Evening!

What a beautiful weekend! I even got out to go for a walk. I hope everyone got to enjoy some of the sunshine that we have been missing.

This week's happenings:

Math: we switched groups/teachers this week. The kids were excited to see who they were going to have. We began fractions today. Fractions will last at least until Spring Break.

Reading: Not much has changed for this. We are still discussing different folktales.

Writing: The kids are creating a persuasive essay on why Pec Elementary is the best. They will then take that information and create a brochure to show their persuasive talents.

They are also writing a first person account of Sophie from The BFG. They are pretending to be her and write a journal entry from her point of view. This is the book that I am reading aloud to them in class.

Social Studies: We have traveled to N. America, S. America, Africa, Asia, and today we started Europe. I hope to finish Europe today and then by the end of the week travel to both Antarctica and Australia.  We are learning much and watching some interesting videos. Today we watched a video on the French countryside. Last week we watched a video on the tiger and saw some of the Great Wall of China.

Have a great night!

Our Valentine's party is Friday at 2:15

Please don't send posters until Wednesday or Thursday. I just don't have the room to store them for too long. Thank you!

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good Afternoon,

HAPPY 100th DAY of SCHOOL!

Our Valentine's Day party will be next Friday the 13th at 2:15. A note came home with your child if you had volunteered to bring something and a note also came home regarding the posters they will need for the party too.

Tomorrow is our Carrie Lynn Presentation for personal safety. It is important to have a serious conversation with your child about being safe and what are appropriate behaviors from adults. This is not a fun topic to think about but it is a serious one!

We have been beginning to take the practice PARCC tests in class. We will work through them slowly and thoroughly so that each student knows what to expect as well as they can. You can check the practice tests out too at:

Have a great night!

Tuesdays in Third Grade

Good afternoon,
I almost put Monday in the title. So much for a second full week of school!  Oh my, did we get some snow. These are what true snow days are supposed to be though!
I hope everyone was safe in their travels.

This week we will be finishing up our snowmen and stories. We will also be comparing the point of view of a familiar story from two different characters within that story.

In math we will be finishing up multiplication this week and then moving on to fractions! (YEAH!!!)

Please still have your child practice their facts. Xtramath will still be required for all third grade students.
In reading we will be working on folktales for a little longer and also beginning to talk about idioms.

We are still working on our continents in Social Studies. Towards the end of the moth the students will have an at-home project/report to do on a given country. More information will come home when the time gets closer.

Have a good night and again safe travels to all!

Happy weekend!

Today I sent home a second permission slip for the Carrie Lynn presentation. I have misplaced the first ones. I apologize for the inconvenience. Could you please sign and send it in again? Thank you. Jaylen, Katie, and Ethan, I still have yours for some reason, yours were not with the original batch.

Our snowmen were having some fun last night!

Thursdays in Third Grade

Good evening!

What a crazy long week. It seems that this week has lasted for a long time. I guess that is what we get for finally having a full 5 days of school. I will say it is nice to have a full week to get this accomplished. We finally put our snowmen together to accompany our Snowmen at Night stories.

They look awesome! Here they are starting to take form! More pictures to come tomorrow.
