Week of September 24, 2012

Math homework sheet due Friday the 28th. I will go over and explain in class on Tuesday.

Study science for Tuesday.

Study word sorts. I will send home a page for studying on Tuesday. Please ask your child to explain how they sorted their words. Spelling test Friday.

Busy week ahead

We sure do have a busy week! Today the kids got to dissect a flower. We found all the parts and discussed their functions. We are getting ready for our first big science test tomorrow! We reviewed our study guides today too. Happy studying!  Tomorrow we also have our first math test. It will cover patterns, the communative property, and the associative property. Within the pattern section we will look at fact families too.

Later this week we will send off our first letters to our new fourth grade friends in Earlville, IL. My sister-in-law teaches fourth grade there and has agreed to be pen pals with us.

Don't forget our jog-a-thon is Friday! Help support this fundraiser! It has helped us provide some great technology for our school and other things that the kids truly benefit from. Permission slips are due Wednesday.

Spelling

Hello parents!
Your child came home with a word sort this evening.  Each week you child will come home with a sort and not a typical spelling list.  This sort will represent the spelling pattern that your child is working on.  On Mondays, I will have each child cut up thier sort and then sort the words into different patterns that they recognize.  I ask that each child practice sorting them at home and describing each different pattern that they recognize.  My hopes is to get each student to recognize the patterns verses memorizing random words.  They need to keep these sorts in their binders because they will also need them in class daily for other activities.  This is the first time 4th grade is following this procedure so things may change as we see the need.  I do realize that some of the words may seem easy, however, these are the patterns that your child is not recognizing when spelling in everyday writing.
On Fridays your child will have a spelling test.  The words will come from the sort that they have been working with and some words may follow the pattern that they are working on.  If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

PIctures

PICTURES MONDAY!!  COME READY TO IMPRESS!

second full week

Hello!  We had a busy week learning and reviewing procedures.  I would like to take a moment to describe our ticket behavior system..
Every week the students will receive 4 tickets.  Everytime I need to discuss behavior with them they will have to give me a ticket back. If one loses all of their tickets and I have to meet with them a fifth time they will receive a minor.  If I need to meet with them again it will result in getting a major with an office referral.  Any tickets that the students have at the end of the week are theirs to use to "buy" prizes.
The second part of this comes with the students earning more tickets for good behavior, in the hallway especially.  These tickets are then collected and put into a drawing for our Popcorn Friday.  I will pull out 7 students names and they can enjoy popcorn during our silent reading time.  I will have an alternative for those that cannot have popcorn.
This is subject to change if I find it is not working.
Have a great weekend!
